In brief: Business as usual resumes on Mexico-Texas border

*The governor of the US state of Texas, Greg Abbott, has removed controversial additional inspections on vehicles crossing into Texas from Mexico, after reaching agreements with the governors of the Mexican states of Tamaulipas, Coahuila, Chihuahua and Nuevo León. Samuel García Sepúlveda, governor of Nuevo León, was the first to agree to enhance border security measures in exchange for Abbott revoking the extra safety inspections, which had prompted long delays at the border and estimated economic losses of up to US$8m a day. Chihuahua governor, María Eugenia Campos Galván, and Coahuila governor, Miguel Riquelme, were the next to sign similar agreements with Abbott and see extra measures lifted, followed by Tamaulipas governor, Francisco García Cabeza de Vaca. Abbott had imposed the extra measures in anticipation of a rise in “cartel-facilitated smuggling”, due to the upcoming expiration in May of ‘Title 42’, a US federal order that allowed rapid expulsions of migrants to minimise coronavirus (Covid-19) contagion risks. Rights groups have welcomed the decision to revoke ‘Title 42’, which they claimed violated domestic and international law and migrants’ rights.
