In brief: New port earmarked for Argentina’s Tierra del Fuego

* The Argentine firm Grupo Mirgor and the provincial government of Argentina’s Tierra del Fuego have announced plans to construct a multimodal port in Río Grande municipality, the industrial hub of Argentina’s most southerly province. Mirgor will be investing approximately US$210m in the construction of the port. The company’s CEO, José Luis Alonso, said that the port will serve “as a strategic hub for all southern maritime routes, including those towards the Antarctic region, and will re-establish transit with the Falkland Islands/Malvinas”. In a press release, Tierra del Fuego’s governor, Gustavo Melella, added that the port development will “contribute to the development of the province by strengthening industrial and commercial activities, generating new economic sectors, and allowing the replenishment of maritime fleets”. Operations are expected to commence at the port in May 2024.
