In brief: Boost for Mexico’s semiconductor sector

*Mexico’s economy ministry (SE) has signed a collaboration agreement with the Mexican branch of US-headquartered technology company Intel, which is aimed at strengthening Mexico's participation in the global supply chain of semiconductors. Economy Minister Tatiana Clouthier and Intel Mexico’s country director, Santiago Cardona, ratified the agreement, which the SE says aims to “boost Mexico's leadership as an innovation hub in the region” and increase the country’s role in semiconductor supply chains through Intel’s design centre in Guadalajara, Jalisco state. The SE and Intel will work together to develop talent in the sector, increase the competitiveness of Mexican companies through the transfer of knowledge and best practice, and promote Intel’s global programmes such as AI (artificial intelligence) for youth. Intel Mexico employs over 1,700 people with 700 of these jobs generated in the last year. The strengthening of the semiconductor sector is one of the focuses of the US-Mexico High-Level Economic Dialogue (HLED), which met for a progress update on 18 April.
