In brief: Costa Rica’s tourism industry shows more signs of recovery

*Costa Rica’s tourism institute (ICT), a government body, has announced that 631,609 tourists visited the country in the first quarter of 2022, representing 63% of levels registered prior to the coronavirus (Covid-19) pandemic which struck in 2020. Of the 631,609, 579,354 arrived by air. The main source of tourists to Costa Rica continues to be the US, which accounted for 335,970 of arrivals, equivalent to 83% of 2019 levels for the same period. However, tourist arrivals from Europe which totalled 121,597 in the first quarter of 2022, continue to grow, reaching 88% of their 2019 level. A bi-weekly flight from Madrid to Costa Rica will also be introduced this month. Tourism Minister Gustavo Alvarado was positive that tourism would continue to increase in the coming months, adding in the press release that the “increase in flight availability, the upcoming summer holidays in North America and Europe, and the opportunity for unique experiences that Costa Rica has to offer suggest an encouraging outlook for tourism in our country”.
