COLOMBIA: Petro struggles to explain meetings with jailed politicians

Gustavo Petro, the left-wing frontrunner for the first round of Colombia’s presidential election on 29 May, has found himself facing mounting scrutiny over his brother’s meetings with several imprisoned former politicians. Petro, representing the Pacto Histórico coalition, has framed his brother’s discussions with disgraced former public officials – including one jailed for funding paramilitary groups – as part of a reconciliation process that he is planning to implement if elected. Petro’s closest rival, Federico Gutiérrez of the right-wing Equipo por Colombia coalition, has accused him of seeking to forge political alliances by promising reduced sentences for those found guilty of corruption and other crimes.
