ARGENTINA: Opposition incensed over new judicial council

Argentina’s centre-right Juntos por el Cambio (JxC) opposition alliance is threatening to take legal action after accusing the ruling left-of-centre Frente de Todos (FdT) coalition of orchestrating “fraud” in a bid to control the new council of magistrates (Consejo de la Magistratura), the powerful judicial body empowered to hire and fire judges. The political chicanery denounced by the JxC involved an artificial division of the FdT contrived to grant the coalition three of the four senate picks to the 20-strong council and increase its influence on the body.
