PANAMA-REGION: Blinken in Panama for high-level migration talks

US Secretary of State Antony Blinken this week headed up a US delegation to Panama where he co-led a ministerial meeting on migration attended by representatives from 20 countries as well as holding bilateral meetings with President Laurentino Cortizo and other officials. With Panama facing unprecedented numbers of migrants passing through the Darién Gap, a dense jungle without roads bordering Colombia, Blinken’s visit and the regional summit underline the continued importance of tackling the issue for the US administration led by President Joe Biden which, faced with record irregular migrant arrivals at the US southern border, has committed to a US$4bn four-year plan for Central America in order to address the root causes.
