HONDURAS: Castro faces unrest

Earlier this month, transport workers staged nationwide protests demanding measures in response to spiralling fuel prices exacerbated by Russia’s war with Ukraine. The show of unrest represents one of the first challenges for President Xiomara Castro, who took office at the end of January, and her leftist Partido Libertad y Refundación (Libre). While the Castro government has since struck a deal with the sector, the resultant rise in tariffs has met with complaints from consumers already struggling with the rise in living costs.
