In brief: Poverty rates fall in Colombia

* Colombia’s national statistics department (Dane) has published its latest report on poverty, which states that 39.3% of the population lived in poverty in 2021, while 12.2% of Colombians were categorised as living in extreme poverty. Both figures represent an improvement on 2020, with poverty having declined by 3.2 percentage points and extreme poverty falling by 2.9 percentage points. The cities with the lowest poverty rates were Medellín (Antioquia department) (27.6%) and Cali (Valle del Cauca) (29.3%), while the poorest cities were Quibdó, (Chocó) (64.8%), and Riohacha, (La Guajira) (56.6%).
