In brief: Protesters evicted from Peru’s Las Bambas mine

*Peru’s national police (PNP) has announced that protesters have been evicted by 676 police officers from “100% of invaded property” at the Las Bambas copper mine in Peru’s Apurímac region. This followed the declaration yesterday by the Peruvian government of a 30-day state of emergency in the districts of Challhuahuacho and Coyllurqui, Cotabambas province, in the Apurímac region, which suspends constitutional guarantees and allows for a military deployment. The mine, which is owned by Chinese company MMG and produces 2% of the global copper supply, had previously suspended operations on 19 April due to “safety concerns” after approximately 130 people from the local community of Fuerabamba occupied the mine. The protesters were targeting MMG’s alleged failure to uphold its social and environmental obligations to residents. According to the Chinese Peruvian chamber of commerce (Capechi), the mine’s closure due to the protests has translated into losses of some PEN$5.2m (US$1.4m) a day.
