NICARAGUA: Ortega evicts OAS, withdraws from bloc

Nicaragua, one of the 21 founding members of the Organization of American States (OAS) in 1948, emphatically terminated its association with the hemispheric bloc on 24 April. Foreign Minister Denis Moncada announced the withdrawal with immediate effect of Nicaragua’s permanent representative to the OAS, and the closure of OAS headquarters in Managua, issuing a declaration of public utility and transferring ownership to the state. The building was promptly surrounded by the national police. A ‘museum of infamy’ will be established in its place. The OAS responded in a terse statement that Nicaragua had committed a “violation of the most elementary international norms” and, whatever it might say or like to think, remained a full member until late 2023.
