COSTA RICA: Chaves reveals initial cabinet picks

Costa Rica’s president-elect Rodrigo Chaves has unveiled some of his ministerial choices ahead of taking office on 8 May. Of the appointments, which were revealed on 22 April, only two were identified with his campaign and party, Progreso Social Democrático (PPSD), which, like Chaves himself, was relatively unknown before his surprise performance in the first round of presidential elections in February. Appointments to key portfolios such as finance and economy have yet to be revealed, however, and are set to draw major scrutiny given the priorities facing the incoming administration of reviving the economy hit by the impact of the coronavirus (Covid-19) pandemic and ensuring the continuance of Costa Rica’s programme with the International Monetary Fund (IMF).
