CHILE: Violence increases pressure on Boric

Chile’s President Gabriel Boric promised a dramatic change of approach to the longstanding conflict with the Mapuche during his election campaign. But militant Mapuche are unimpressed with his government’s offer of dialogue and have stepped up arson attacks, leading truckers to erect roadblocks in protest. This is putting pressure on Boric to reimpose the state of emergency declared during the government of his predecessor Sebastián Piñera (2018-2022) or come up with a viable alternative.
