*Uruguay’s President Luis Alberto Lacalle Pou has met a delegation from umbrella trade union federation Plenario Intersindical de Trabajadores–Convención Nacional de Trabajadores (PIT-CNT) which presented the government with ten proposals to reactivate the economy and address the rise in inflation which reached 9.37% year-on-year in April. Among other things the proposals call for: the amount handed out via Asignaciones Familiares – Plan de Equidad (AFAM-PE), a conditional cash transfer programme given to households with children under 18 years old experiencing socioeconomic vulnerability, to be doubled over a year; an increase in the national minimum salary which currently stands at UR$19,364 (US$475) a month; an increase in public investment; and the establishment of a process of tripartite social dialogue with the aim of coming up with a job creation plan. PIT-CNT claims that the average real salary is currently 4.4% below levels registered prior to the coronavirus (Covid-19) pandemic.
