VENEZUELA-REGION: Maduro looks to capitalise on high oil prices

Paraguay’s President Mario Abdo Benítez said on 3 May that there was “no way” that his government would negotiate with Venezuela while Nicolás Maduro remained in power. His comments came in response to the news that the senate leadership presided over by Óscar Salomón of the ruling Asociación Nacional Republicana-Partido Colorado (ANR-PC), had met a delegation of Venezuelan deputies to discuss the possible renewal of oil exports to Paraguay. With several countries in the region facing domestic protests over high fuel prices, the worry for Venezuela’s political opposition is that the prospect of cheaper oil supplies could soon trump professed concerns over democracy and human rights in Venezuela.
