MEXICO: Violence erupts on Jalisco-Michoacán border

The main square of Mazamitla, a popular tourist town in Mexico’s western state of Jalisco, descended into chaos on 1 May. Videos on social media showed crowds fleeing May Day celebrations amid sounds of gunfire. State authorities attributed the violence to clashes between rival drug trafficking organisations (DTOs), advising the public to stay inside. This is the latest sign of growing violence in the area surrounding Jalisco’s border with Michoacán state.
