MEXICO: Violent crime encroaches on tourist hotspots

Quintana Roo’s state tourism ministry (Sedetur) expected to welcome around 1.2m international tourists over the Easter holidays, a 36.6% increase on the year before. However, tourists were not the only ones to descend on Quintana Roo’s popular Caribbean beaches over the holiday period. Hundreds of members of the army, navy and national guard (GN) were deployed to tourist hotspots around the state in a bid to ward off the violence that has increasingly plagued Quintana Roo in recent months. Despite these efforts, a man was killed and another injured in a shooting that took place on the road between the popular tourist destinations of Playa del Carmen and Tulum on 15 April.
