MEXICO: Water scarcity looms large in northern Mexico

Droughts have increasingly affected Mexico in recent years, and it appears 2022 is to be no different. On 12 April, Mexico’s federal water commission (Conagua) reported that rainfall between 1 January and 10 April 2022 was 31.5% lower than the historic average for the period. Compounded by last year’s prolonged lack of rain and severe drought [SSR-21-06], this has meant that many water reservoirs around the country – particularly in the arid northern states – are at critically low levels.
