In brief: Nicaragua hails surge in remittances

*Nicaragua’s central bank (BCN) has released its latest figures on remittances which show that these totalled US$632.6m in the first quarter of 2022, up 26.4% on the same period in 2021. The main source countries were the US which accounted for 70.0% of the total followed by Spain (11.1%); Costa Rica (10.9%); Panama (2.5%) and Canada (1.2%). Remittances from the US were up 44.5% in the first quarter of 2022 compared with the same period in 2021 while those from Spain were down 9.1% and those from Costa Rica were up 3.4%.
