In brief: Brazil’s Bolsonaro pushes for Petrobras role in Guyanese oil extraction

* Brazil’s President Jair Bolsonaro and Guyana’s President Irfaan Ali have held talks in the Guyanese capital, Georgetown, where Bolsonaro pushed for Brazil’s state-controlled oil company Petrobras to play a leading role in hydrocarbon extraction in Guyana. Following the meeting, Ali said that “in the area of energy we have discussed working together on a natural gas strategy and how that can be integrated in the development of Brazil and how we can coordinate and cooperate in this area.” Bolsonaro said: “Regarding oil and gas, we have a Brazilian giant named Petrobras, for which cooperation with Guyana is increasingly becoming a reality.” The two leaders also announced that Brazil will provide Guyana with technical support in the construction of a deep water port, road and rail infrastructure, hydroelectric development, and fibreoptic connectivity.
