In brief: Peru announces major bridge building programme
* Peru’s defence minister, José Luis Gavidia, has announced that the government intends to invest PEN700m (US$183.1m) in the construction of 1,083 bridges around the country. He said that construction will be led by the army’s engineering battalions, which will prioritise building small bridges of 30m-50m in order to connect isolated communities. According to Gavidia, 20 such bridges are currently under construction, and President Pedro Castillo’s administration intends to complete at least 20 bridges per month.
