In brief: Port workers on strike in Uruguay

* Uruguay’s port workers’ union, Sindicato Único Portuario y Ramas Afines (Supra), has said it will stage strikes today (11 May) and has rejected proposals from the Uruguayan government in response to the 3 May announcement by container handling company Montecon that it was dismissing 150 workers and reducing salaries of remaining employees by up to 50%. Supra announced strike action on 5 May in response to the announcement by Montecon, whose shareholders are Chilean firm Ultramar and Canada’s ATCO. Supra blames the dismissals on an agreement signed in March 2021 by the Uruguayan government and Belgian logistics company, Katoen Natie (which owns 80% of Uruguay’s Montevideo port with the rest owned by the Uruguayan state), that in exchange for a US$455m investment commitment, Katoen Natie’s container terminal operating licence was being extended by a further 50 years to 2081.
