COLOMBIA: Clan del Golfo bares its teeth

Colombia’s largest drug-trafficking organisation (DTO), the Clan del Golfo, launched a six-day ‘armed strike’ on 5 May, causing disruption in 11 of Colombia’s 33 departments. Warning the public to stay off the roads or risk violence, the Clan del Golfo killed nine people and torched over 180 vehicles that ventured out in spite of the order. The offensive was launched in protest at the extradition of the DTO’s leader, Dairo Antonio Úsuga (‘Otoniel’), who was placed on a flight to New York on 4 May.
