In brief: Uruguayan port dispute intensifies with legal action

* Deputies from Uruguay’s left-wing opposition party Frente Amplio (FA) have filed a legal challenge against an agreement between President Luis Alberto Lacalle Pou’s government and the Belgian logistics company Katoen Natie, which owns 80% of the port in the capital, Montevideo. Katoen Natie, which has recently come under fire for lay-offs that triggered strikes by port workers, was awarded a 50 year extension to its container terminal operating licence in March 2021. In the FA deputies’ appeal against the licence extension, they accuse the Lacalle Pou administration of establishing “a monopoly that benefits a private company, which is banned under the Constitution’s section on competition.”
