In brief: Unemployment down year-on-year in Brazil

* Brazil’s national statistics institute (Ibge) has released the latest figures on unemployment, which stood at 11.1% in the first quarter of 2022. This was unchanged since Q4 2021, but down 3.8 percentage points year-on-year. Unemployment in Q1 was highest in the states of Bahia (17.6%), Pernambuco (17.0%), and Rio de Janeiro (14.9%), and lowest in Santa Catarina (4.5%), Mato Grosso (5.3%), and Mato Grosso do Sul (6.5%). The gender employment gap was 4.6 percentage points, with 13.7% of women unemployed compared to 9.1% of men. The informality rate in Q1 was 40.1%, and was highest in the states of Pará (62.9%), Maranhão (59.7%), and Amazonas (58.1%).
