In brief: Spain urges progress on FTAs with Chile, Mercosur
* Spain’s foreign minister, José Manuel Albares, has called for progress on the modernisation of free trade agreements (FTA) between the European Union (EU) and Chile, the Southern Common Market (Mercosur) countries of Brazil, Argentina, Uruguay and Paraguay, and Mexico. “There is no region on the planet more Euro-compatible than Latin America and Europe too often turns its back on it,” said Albares at a meeting of EU foreign ministers in Brussels, Belgium. “Today I am going to insist that it is necessary to conclude, ratify, move forward definitively with the trade agreements with Chile, with Mexico and, of course, with Mercosur.” An agreement with Mercosur was reached in 2019, but its ratification has stalled, as countries including France and Austria vetoed the process, claiming that Brazil’s President Jair Bolsonaro has not respected the 2015 Paris Agreement on climate change amid devastating Amazon fires and environmentally damaging policies. The EU and Chile have been negotiating a modernisation of a 2003 FTA since 2017.
