In brief: Costa Rica lifts ban on Mexico avocado imports

*Costa Rica’s new president, Rodrigo Chaves, has announced the lifting of a ban on Mexican avocado imports. His announcement is in line with a 13 April ruling by the World Trade Organization (WTO) in a dispute with Costa Rica over restrictions on avocado imports. Costa Rican authorities banned the import of Mexican Hass avocados in May 2015, ostensibly because they carried a risk of the Avocado sunblotch viroid (ASBVd) entering the country. In March 2017 Mexican authorities appealed to the WTO, accusing Costa Rica of unwarranted restriction of the trade of avocados. The WTO arbitration panel found in Mexico’s favour on the main point of its appeal, arguing that the sanitary risk assessment prepared by Costa Rica lacked sufficient scientific rigour.
