In brief: UN fund approves finance for Ecuador’s Galápagos Islands

* The Green Climate Fund (GCF) – a fund established within the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) – has approved financing of US$117.6m to fund action against climate change in Ecuador’s Galápagos Islands. According to a GCF statement, the finance “aims to strengthen local communities through the rehabilitation of ecosystems and promotion of climate-smart agriculture and tourism practices.” The funding will also go towards reforming the energy matrix on the Galápagos, “assist[ing] the establishment of the Conolophus local power plant and draw[ing] investments for renewable energy sources, reducing overall energy dependence on imported diesel.”
