PERU: Student protests set to strain Castillo-congress relations

There were large protests in cities across Peru on 13 May, as thousands of students took to the streets to demonstrate against two education reform bills recently approved by congress. President Pedro Castillo has sought to remain above the fray, but may find himself caught between the student movement and a sizeable majority in congress that supported the bills, including the far-left Perú Libre (PL) with which he won office. At stake are two issues – university regulation, and the politically thorny topic of sex education in schools.
