*Prominent unions such as Sindicato Único Nacional de Trabajadores de la Construcción y Similares (Suntracs) and Confederación Nacional de Unidad Sindical Independiente (Conusi) have staged protests in Panama’s capital, Panama City, over the rise in fuel prices and living costs. The demonstrations follow protests staged earlier this week by students over the same issue. The local press is reporting that as of today (20 May) the price of a litre of gasoline with a 95 octane rating will rise to US$1.42 (up US$0.58 per gallon) and the price of per litre of gasoline with a 91 octane rating will rise to US$1.33 (up US$0.49) in the provinces of Panamá and Colón, with prices set to be higher elsewhere in the country. Meanwhile a litre of diesel will cost US$1.30, a decline of US$0.22. Monthly inflation in Panama was 0.6% in April bringing the year-on-year rate to 3.7%. The greatest year-on-year increases were registered in transport (13.7%); restaurants & hotels (3.5%) and food and non-alcoholic drinks (3.0%).
