In brief: Argentina’s growth slows

* Argentina’s national statistics institute (Indec) has published its latest monthly index of economic activity (Emae), showing that Argentina’s economic activity expanded 4.8% year-on-year in March 2022, down from 9.1% in February 2022. The same figures show it contracted 0.7% compared with the previous month. As with the previous month, the strongest performing sector was hotels & restaurants which posted 33.1% year-on-year growth, followed by transport & communications (12.7%), and mining (12.1%). The only sector that contracted was agriculture, which fell by 5.5% compared to the previous year. The latest (27 April) forecast by the United Nations Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean projects that Argentina’s GDP will grow by 3.0% in 2022.
