In brief: Gov’t moves to address fuel shortages in Bolivia

* Bolivia’s hydrocarbons and energy minister, Franklin Molina, has said that the state-owned hydrocarbons company Yacimientos Petrolíferos Fiscales Bolivianos (YPFB) will guarantee the supply of petrol and diesel amid major disruption to fuel distribution in recent days. Long queues have formed at pumps in cities such as La Paz, Cochabamba, and Santa Cruz since yesterday, which Molina attributed to industrial action in the northern Chilean port of Arica (Arica province), which all diesel imports to Bolivia pass through; and to a failure by Peru’s state-owned oil company Petroperú to deliver fuel to Bolivia. He said that distribution will return to normal in the coming days, and that the government will fine any suppliers guilty of price gouging during the shortages.
