VENEZUELA: Early start to a long presidential race

Nícmer Evans may have set some kind of political record. On 26 May the party he founded, the Movimiento Democracia e Inclusión (MDI), said it would nominate him in any presidential primaries held by the opposition ahead of the 2024 elections. In effect, he has been the first to throw his hat in the ring roughly two years ahead of time, and way before the terms of the elections, which will be organised by the authoritarian government of Nicolás Maduro, are in any way clear or predictable. But he may be part of a trend: Venezuelan politicians are back in a campaigning mood.
