Extreme weather strikes again in Brazil

Recife, the state capital of Pernambuco in northeast Brazil, is reeling from the effect of torrential rains which started falling on 25 May. As of the morning of 31 May, 100 people had been reported dead due to the rains and resultant mudslides. A couple of dozen were still missing and thousands had been left without a home. On 30 May, the federal government declared a state of emergency in Recife and 13 other municipalities in Pernambuco.
