US advisor seeks to shore up support in Argentina ahead of Summit

Argentina: On 26 May the White House’s Special Adviser for the Summit of the Americas Christopher Dodd met with Argentina’s President Alberto Fernández and Secretary for Strategic Affairs Gustavo Béliz in Argentina, as part of a tour of the region aimed at shoring up support ahead of the Summit of the Americas. According to a US embassy press release, Dodd emphasised the strength of a US-Argentina relationship “built on our shared commitment to democracy, human rights, and economic prosperity”. He reiterated US hopes that “Argentina will be an active Summit participant — especially important given its role as a regional leader”. He added that the Summit of the Americas will focus on some of the most vital, shared issues from across the hemisphere. These include ensuring democracy delivers for every country; strategising on ways to achieve shared climate goals; working for a stronger, more collaborative coronavirus (Covid-19) response; and addressing economic instability and human rights. He adds that “Argentina is a leading voice in these areas and will have a great deal to contribute to these discussions at the Summit, helping to improve the lives of people across our hemisphere”.
