BRAZIL: Lula pledges to slash Amazon deforestation

 On 4 June Brazil’s former leftist president Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (2003-2011), the current frontrunner ahead of October presidential elections, pledged to cut deforestation in the Amazon and ban mining in indigenous lands as part of a broader plan to “rebuild” Brazil’s environmental policy.
