BOLIVIA: MAS divisions deepen

The cracks are getting wider in Bolivia’s Movimiento al Socialismo (MAS). The left-wing party, which achieved hegemonic status under former president Evo Morales (2006-2019) and continues to dominate national politics under President Luis Arce, is increasingly riven between factions loyal to each of those men. The latest flashpoint was Morales’ effort to secure the impeachment of Arce’s interior minister, Eduardo del Castillo, who faced a congressional grilling on 31 May. Such interventions by Morales are growing more frequent, yet Arce has so far refrained from returning fire for fear of antagonising the MAS rank and file.
