ECUADOR: Llori’s downfall increases risk of legislative gridlock

President Guillermo Lasso’s difficulties in passing legislation look set to worsen after the president of Ecuador’s national assembly, Guadalupe Llori, was ousted in a vote of no confidence on 1 June. Llori had not always seen eye to eye with Lasso, but her leadership of the legislature had ensured majority support on government bills from her divided indigenous party, Pachakutik (PK). Her successor, the independent Virgilio Saquicela, has so far been met with hostility by the Lasso administration.
