BRAZIL: Bolsonaro hails meeting with Biden

On 9 June Brazil’s President Jair Bolsonaro said he was positively impressed by his US counterpart, Joe Biden, after what he called an “exceptionally good” meeting on the sidelines of the Summit of the Americas (SoA) in Los Angeles.

Analysis:

Brazil’s leader, an avowed supporter of Biden’s predecessor, Donald Trump (2017-2021), who has questioned the validity of the US elections in 2020, has attempted to build bridges in his meeting with Biden, trying to sell Brazil as a reliable trading partner at times of geopolitical turbulence and disruptions in global supply chains. Despite the pleasantries on both sides, Bolsonaro’s dismal environmental track record in the Amazon and his dubious respect for democratic elections remained hot button issues that could hamper a swifter rapprochement.
