THE ECONOMY: Slowing down, but how much?

The finance ministry is trying to massage expectations about the economy. It pre-empted the official first quarter growth figure, due to be published on 17 May, by saying that the economy grew by 3%, year-on-year. The finance ministry explains this poor figure by saying that it reflects the fact that Holy Week, traditionally a holiday, fell in the first quarter this year.
