In brief: Argentina introduces alternative copper export duty

* Argentina’s economy minister, Martín Guzmán, has announced a new progressive tax rate on copper exports, which is aimed at boosting production and exports of the metal. The new optional regime will allow companies to choose whether to keep the fixed 4.5% rate or choose the variable rate scheme, with ranges between 0% and 8%. Guzmán said the government led by President Alberto Fernández hoped the scheme would reduce the volatility of the rate of return and would allow investment in copper to increase in Argentina. According to the government, this is the first time that such a scheme has been introduced in the country’s mining sector.
