BOLIVIA: Áñez sentenced to 10 years for ‘coup’

One year and three months after she was first placed in preventive detention, on 11 June Bolivia’s former president Jeanine Áñez (2019-2020) was sentenced to 10 years in prison for illegally assuming the presidency. The verdict triggered a storm of criticism from the political opposition and human-rights organisations, and it will only intensify the polarisation that has marred Bolivian society since Áñez assumed the presidency following the ousting of her predecessor, Evo Morales (2006-2019).
