CHILE: Boric taps out his economic policy headlines

President Gabriel Boric gave his first state of the nation address, known as the ‘cuenta pública’, to congress on 1 June, after exactly 82 days in office. He did so while politically on the defensive. Largely because of ongoing violence by Mapuche radicals in the south of the country, his honeymoon period has virtually evaporated. Much of the population appears to have also lost enthusiasm for constitutional reform (an issue which will be submitted to a referendum in September). Boric nevertheless set out to win back the initiative by making the case for economic reforms.
