New solar park inaugurated. On 31 May the Dominican Republic’s President Luis Abinader inaugurated the country’s newest solar park, El Soco, in Consuelo municipality, San Pedro de Macorís province. Constructed by Spanish firms Bas Corporation and Dominion with a US$93m investment, the new solar park will add 50MW to the grid. President Abinader said that since taking office in August 2020, US$800m has been invested in solar energy projects. He said that in 2021 and so far in 2022, contracts had been signed to install solar energy projects for a total of 620MW. He compared this with the contracts for four solar park projects worth 187.4MW signed under successive governments in the ten years prior to his taking office.
