In brief: Public sector workers strike in Uruguay

* Uruguay’s public sector workers’ union, the Confederación de Organizaciones de Funcionarios del Estado (COFE) and federation of public health officials (FFSP) have called a strike over salary cuts and poor working conditions. Workers from the ministries for social development, agriculture, labour, transport, foreign affairs, tourism, energy, health, and education were among those to take part in the strike action on 16 June, with healthcare workers and electoral court workers also participating. In a statement, COFE accused President Luis Alberto Lacalle Pou of failing to comply with campaign promises and of applying wage reduction measures. The union argues that salary adjustments have failed to keep up with inflation, which stood at 9.37% year-on-year in April, leading to a real-terms salary reduction of 6% for public sector workers. Umbrella trade union federation Plenario Intersindical de Trabajadores–Convención Nacional de Trabajadores (PIT-CNT) expressed its support for the strike. This adds to other strike actions from teachers, metal sector workers and port workers in recent weeks.
