*One of Peru’s transport unions, Asociación de Transportistas del Perú (Asotrape), has said that it will not participate in a strike called by heavy goods vehicle (HGV) drivers for 27 June, allowing for more time to negotiate a deal with the government led by President Pedro Castillo. The strike was called over demands which include a reduction of VAT on fuel, longer lasting license periods and changes to Peru’s highways authority (Sutran). Following a 21 June meeting with Peru’s minister of transport and communications, Juan Barranzuela, who invited the HGV trade union groups to participate in a round table discussion, Asotrape’s national spokesperson, Javier Corrales said that if demands were not met, a strike would take place on 18 July. However, another HGV union, Unión Nacional de Transportistas (UNT), has said that the strike will go ahead on 27 June. UNT spokesperson Javier Marchese, said that the sector is in crisis and the government has failed to offer it anything.
