ECUADOR: Anti-government protests intensify

‘Indefinite’ protests seeking to force President Guillermo Lasso to row back on a raft of his government’s core policies are now into their second week and picking up. On 22 June, an estimated 15,000 demonstrators marched through Quito to protest the rising cost of living, while a police station was set alight in the Amazonian province of Pastaza. Despite the government’s repeated offers of dialogue, the umbrella indigenous organisation Confederación de Nacionalidades Indígenas del Ecuador (Conaie) is refusing to enter talks.
