GUATEMALA: More independent judicial operators under threat

Cardinal Alvaro Ramazzini of Huehuetenango and various human rights groups such as Asociación de Familiares Detenidos en Guatemala (Famdegua), Centro para la Acción Legal en Derechos Humanos (CALDH) and Verdad y Justicia have all recently come out in support of Miguel Ángel Gálvez, a judge in one of Guatemala’s high-risk courts. Gálvez is the latest judge seemingly targeted in what human rights groups and international institutions warn is a campaign waged by authorities including the attorney general’s office, led by its discredited and recently re-appointed head María Conseulo Porras [WR-22-20], against justice officials for their work involving emblematic cases of serious human rights violations, corruption, and impunity.
