Weekly Report - 23 June 2022 (WR-22-25)

President Gabriel Boric’s troubled start to his tenure is showing no signs of improving. On 22 June the copper miners’ union Federación de Trabajadores del Cobre (FTC) went on strike over the decision by the state-owned copper company Codelco, supported by the Boric administration, to close down its Ventanas smelter in the central region of Valparaíso on environmental grounds. Negotiations between the FTC, Codelco, and the government are taking place as we go to press on 23 June but even a short strike, let alone a protracted one, would result in significant losses.
