Turning pink again

Introduction

In a grossly simplified account of a complex process, Latin America swung decisively to the left in the first decade of this century, in a movement that became known as the ‘pink tide’. By the latter half of second decade, however, that move had lost impetus. The tide was swept back by advancing right-wing administrations, some of which adopted their own versions of the populist style of US President Donald Trump (2017-2021). However, in the late twenty-tens and the early twenty-twenties things are on the move again. Left-wing electoral victories in Mexico, Honduras, Chile, and Colombia, among others are being described as a second wave of the pink tide. What will it be like?
